CopperTree Analytics’ Kaizen solution has been implemented on a wide variety of buildings around the world. Among different building types, our portfolio of buildings includes commercial office buildings, hospitals, schools, universities, research facilities, recreational centres, government buildings, and warehouses.

If you have already implemented building analytics, or are considering analytics, here are two simple tips from our experience so that you can get the most out of your analytics implementation.

1. Engage all stakeholders

Regardless of which department is spearheading the analytics project, they should try to engage the other departments within the organization. In some cases, it could be the Facilities Management Team that is directly overseeing the analytics implementation, and they may be the primary users. However, if there is an Energy Management Team within the same organization, they may be interested in the results from the analytics solution as well. It is important to ensure that all stakeholders are aware of the implementation, and the capabilities of the analytics solution. Providing them with an overview of the features of the analytics platform might be the first step in engaging them in the project.

Here is an example: Six months into the implementation of building analytics at a major hospital in Canada, the Lead Building Operator realized that the Boiler Chief, who was never included in the project up until that point was relying on archaic methods for reporting. It only took one demonstration of the reporting functionalities of the analytics platform for the Boiler Chief to be subscribed to Weekly Reports. Those reports are now providing him value on an ongoing basis.

2. Operator Workflow Integration

Buildings frequently undergo Building Automation System (BAS) configuration “changes”, and faults may occur anytime. From our experience, building operators and those in the frontline of operations and maintenance activities are more likely to use the results from the analytics platform when the results are integrated into the operations and maintenance process. Consider what features and results from the analytics platform are suitable for review in weekly or monthly meetings – this could be the first step to integrate analytics into operator workflows.
