77 Retail Stores. $190K in Identified Savings. Portfolio-Wide Expansion.
A major US national retailer engaged CopperTree Analytics to uncover and resolve building inefficiencies across its stores. After integration in about two weeks, CopperTree’s Technical Services team completed deep-dive engineering analysis on 77 stores – delivering actionable insights, quantified savings, and a clear path forward. Convinced by the outcome, the retailer is now moving to a full-portfolio rollout.
Our Challenge
The retailer operated on a reactive maintenance model – fixing equipment only after it failed – with no unified view
of building performance across stores. Energy was wasted invisibly, comfort issues went undiagnosed, and crews
troubleshot blindly. They needed to see each building clearly, prioritize what mattered most, and act before failures occurred – without ripping out existing systems.
What They Needed
- A unified view of performance across
every store - Early fault detection before equipment failed
- Dollar-quantified priorities – not just
raw alerts - A solution that layered onto existing Building Automation Systems
- A scalable model deployable store by
store, fast
Our Solution
CopperTree paired its Kaizen FDD platform with a hands-on Technical Services team. Kaizen continuously analyzes building automation data to surface faults and inefficiencies; CopperTree engineers translate those signals into a prioritized, dollar-quantified action list. It is data plus human expertise that delivers decisions — not just alerts.
Integrated in ~2 Weeks
Integration with existing BAS infrastructure, data began flowing within days – no ripand-replace required. Fast and repeatable, designed to scale store by store.
Managed Services
CopperTree’s engineers met bi-weekly with the retailer’s team, working store by store and prioritizing issues with the highest savings potential and occupant comfort – from simultaneous heating and cooling to RTU cooling failure.
From Reactive to
Predictive
The program shifted the retailer from firefighting to foresight – pointing teams straight to root causes, sending crews to the right store with a clear checklist, and catching faults early to reduce wear and prevent costly failures.
Recurring Problems Driving Most of the Waste
Simultaneous Heating &
Cooling
Roof-top units heating and
cooling the same zone at the same time – a common, costly conflict invisible without FDD.
After-Hours Operation
HVAC systems and lighting running during closed hours across multiple stores, adding unnecessary energy costs every night.
Setpoint Drift
Temperature and equipment
setpoints drifting out of optimal range – degrading comfort and efficiency silently over time.
Manual Override Bypass
Systems left in manual override, bypassing energy-saving logic that should have been running automatically.
Our Results
Every figure here comes from the 77 stores analyzed to date. CopperTree surfaced 275 distinct insights – 68 carry quantified savings calculations and 21 are already resolved. Those resolved fixes alone capture $105,755 per year – more than half of the total identified value, from only a fraction of the insights.
A Starting Point, Not a Ceiling
Dozens of quantified opportunities remain open and the rest of the portfolio is still to be analyzed – so these results are just the beginning. The clearest endorsement is the retailer’s own next move: a full portfolio rollout of the same fast, light-touch model that delivered these savings.
